An untold and a long story 😛, trying to keep it short.

Introduction

Starting off with a short introduction about me, I am currently working as a Developer in a Fintech firm. It’s been almost 2 years now since I joined and started working for my current organization. I am a product enthusiast and stepping into this Product Management field to explore more about it.

Btw there could be a question, you all must be thinking about, who is a product manager?

Who is a Product Manager?

So let me tell you the definition of a Product Manager.

A Product Manager is the one who is customer-centric and thinks about the business and the time and effort he/she has to put in to deliver the best solution to solve a problem for the customer's need and solve the problem at scale.

Now coming to the next question, from where did I get to know this term Product Management?

When and Where did I get to know about PM?

I am currently in the early stage of my career and it's just 2 years I have been in this IT industry. I was trying to figure is my current role a correct for me and believe me, it took me almost 1.5 years after exploring multiple things and then confirming myself on the career track I wanna choose. I heard this fancy term Product Management when I started as an intern(the same organization I am working with). I use to think they are managers, and manage people, but the fact is they manage the process of building products and their features by collaborating with multiple teams. At that time, it was just another role in the organization for me.

So next, why Product Management as a Career?

Why Product Management as a Career, transitioning from Dev?

So being a developer, I have been working on building features by understanding the requirement and developing them. I get to know what and how, but the answer to why is almost unknown to me. I have always been curious, thinking about why we need a particular feature what is the reason behind building certain features, and how is it actually helping the user?

I have always been interested to know how successful products are built and what is the thought process behind that, setting a vision, understanding the market, and analyzing competitors(if any). How to take a product from 0–1 and sustain that is what excites me and is pushing me to hop into this career path and take a step towards transition.

One of the most important things I believe is we are not our customers, we cannot assume and build products/features based on assumption made by the like and dislikes we personally have. Understanding Customer Empathy is the most important part here and solving the actual pain points would actually provide value to the user at scale.

Lastly, a PM is also an entrepreneur, you must be thinking about how?

A product manager actually owns a product or a segment of a product and he/she is totally responsible for the downfall or growth of that particular product or segment of a product. A PM owns is all and that is where the leadership skills and entrepreneur skills kick in.
